چکیده

We present a simple model for synthesis of butterfly wing patterns. The model simulates the formation of eyespots as are called the rounded circular arrangements which appear in many butterfly species. We illustrate our results with the examples of Diatheria clymena and Automeris io species.

Mimicry in butterflies: co-option and a bag of magnificent developmental genetic tricks.

Butterfly wing patterns are key adaptations that are controlled by remarkable developmental and genetic mechanisms that facilitate rapid evolutionary change. With swift advancements in the fields of genomics and genetic manipulations, identifying the regulators of wing development and mimetic wing patterns has become feasible even in nonmodel organisms such as butterflies. Recent mapping and ge...

Elements of butterfly wing patterns.

The color patterns on the wings of butterflies are unique among animal color patterns in that the elements that make up the overall pattern are individuated. Unlike the spots and stripes of vertebrate color patterns, the elements of butterfly wing patterns have identities that can be traced from species to species, and typically across genera and families. Because of this identity it is possibl...

The Evolution of Pattern Formation in Butterfly Wings

I employed a comparative gene expression approach to address the evolution of butterfly wing pattern formation at several levels, including early pattern determination and pigment gene regulation during late development. Expression analysis of the receptor molecule Notch suggested several previously unknown roles for Notch signaling in butterfly wing patterning. Notch upregulation was found to ...

Macroevolutionary shifts of WntA function potentiate butterfly wing-pattern diversity.

Butterfly wing patterns provide a rich comparative framework to study how morphological complexity develops and evolves. Here we used CRISPR/Cas9 somatic mutagenesis to test a patterning role for WntA, a signaling ligand gene previously identified as a hotspot of shape-tuning alleles involved in wing mimicry. We show that WntA loss-of-function causes multiple modifications of pattern elements i...

Theoretical models in development 93 Butterfly wing patterns: how good a determining mechanism is the simple diffusion of a single morphogen?

The generation of the wing patterns of three species of butterflies has been simulated using a set of biologically-plausible assumptions. First, that there are morphogen sources and sinks on wings; second, that the morphogen, itself unstable, moves through the wing by simple diffusion; and, third, that the overt pattern derives from cells interpreting the local morphogen concentration. The comp...
